Alaska Hunting Seasons & Licensing

2025–2026 Season

Alaska offers the most diverse and challenging hunting in North America. Species include moose, caribou, Dall sheep, mountain goat, brown/grizzly bear, black bear, Sitka black-tailed deer, elk (on Afognak and Raspberry Islands), muskox, bison, and wolf. The state is almost entirely public land — over 220 million acres are open to hunting. Alaska hunting requires serious logistical planning, with many areas accessible only by bush plane, boat, or horseback. The state is divided into 26 Game Management Units with distinct regulations.

Dates shown are for the 2025–2026 season based on the most recent published regulations. Always verify current dates with the Alaska Department of Fish and Game before hunting.

Tags, Draws & Lotteries

Alaska uses a drawing permit system for many high-demand species and areas — including some moose, caribou, Dall sheep, mountain goat, muskox, and bison hunts. Applications are typically due in December for the following year. There is no preference or bonus point system — all draws are random. General season hunts (no draw required) are available for many species in many GMUs. Non-residents must hire a licensed guide for brown/grizzly bear, Dall sheep, and mountain goat hunts — this is state law, not optional.

Harvest Reporting

Alaska requires mandatory harvest reporting and sealing for most big game species. Brown bear, Dall sheep, mountain goat, muskox, and wolves must be sealed (inspected) by an ADF&G representative within a specified timeframe — typically 3 to 15 days depending on species and location. Moose and caribou require harvest tickets that must be reported. Failure to report or seal is a serious violation.
