Illinois Hunting Seasons & Licensing

2025–2026 Season

Illinois is one of the top trophy white-tailed deer states in the country — Pike County alone is legendary among deer hunters for producing record-class bucks. The state has approximately 300,000 deer hunters. Illinois is a shotgun/muzzleloader/handgun-only state for deer during the firearms season. The state also offers excellent wild turkey, waterfowl, and upland hunting. Public hunting is available on over 450,000 acres of state-managed sites.

Dates shown are for the 2025–2026 season based on the most recent published regulations. Always verify current dates with the Illinois Department of Natural Resources before hunting.

Tags, Draws & Lotteries

Illinois uses a lottery system for non-resident firearm deer permits and spring turkey permits (by county). Applications for firearm deer are due in early June. Non-resident archery deer permits are available over the counter — this is the most accessible way for non-residents to hunt Illinois deer. Resident permits are generally available OTC. There is no preference point system. Pike and Adams counties are among the most competitive non-resident deer draws in the country.

Harvest Reporting

Illinois requires mandatory harvest reporting for all deer and turkey through the IDNR online check system or by phone. Reporting must be completed by midnight the day of harvest. Each harvest receives a confirmation number. CWD surveillance is active — mandatory testing in designated CWD management zones.
