South Dakota Hunting Seasons & Licensing

2025–2026 Season

South Dakota is the pheasant hunting capital of the United States, with the annual pheasant opener in October drawing hunters from across the country. The state also offers good white-tailed and mule deer hunting, pronghorn, elk in the Black Hills, and waterfowl. Over 1 million acres of public land are available for hunting, supplemented by the Walk-In Area (WIA) program that opens private land to public hunting access.

Dates shown are for the 2025–2026 season based on the most recent published regulations. Always verify current dates with the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks before hunting.

Tags, Draws & Lotteries

South Dakota uses a lottery system for many big game licenses. Non-resident East River deer and some West River deer tags are by lottery — applications are due in early April. Archery deer licenses are generally available without a draw. Elk and pronghorn are by lottery for both residents and non-residents. There is no preference point system for most species — drawings are random, with some exceptions for elk. The Walk-In Area (WIA) program opens hundreds of thousands of acres of private land to walk-in hunting access during the season.

Harvest Reporting

South Dakota requires mandatory harvest reporting for all deer, pronghorn, elk, and turkey. Reporting must be completed within 24 hours of harvest through the SD GFP website or by phone. CWD surveillance is active — voluntary and mandatory testing depending on the management unit.
